Willard Gatewood later identifies the families who make up this group from 1880 to 1920 as the Duprees, Haydens, Baldwins, Allstons, Wilsons, Latimores, Lewises, Grimkés, and Ruffins, and describes them as noted noted for “[Their] respectability, moral rectitude, social grace, education, sometimes ancestry, and skin tone.”
